WHAT: Today, the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education will hold a public study session during its monthly Board Retreat to reassess its "random metal detector search policy" (LAUSD BUL-5424.2).

Stakeholders, including students, parents, educators, and advocates, will collectively call for an end to the ineffective and discriminatory policy and present community policy solutions that bolster school safety, improve school climate, and protect student rights.

"Random metal detector searches" are ineffective in promoting safety and foster a perception of a police-state environment that erodes school trust built with students and parents. Ultimately, these searches target students of color, have adverse psychological and social impacts, and undermine the quality education all students deserve.
