Jails Project

The ACLU Foundation of Southern California is the court ordered monitor of the conditions of confinement and medical services within all Los Angeles County jail facilities.Through advocacy, public education and litigation, we work to ensure that a basic standard of care is provided to individuals.

LGBTQ Rights

The ACLU SoCal works to eradicate discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. We're committed to creating a state where LGBTQ people can live openly and with dignity, respect, and fair treatment.

National Security

The ACLU has led the fight against the government’s illegal spying, detention and torture programs in the wake of 9/11.

Police Practices

Our laws give police extraordinary authority. Based on their judgments in the moment, police can stop members of the public, search them, use force on them and even kill them. When police abuse that authority, they can cause extraordinary harm.

Privacy and Surveillance

You have the right to expect that your life will not become an open book when you have not done, and are not suspected of doing, anything wrong.

Religious Liberty

The First Amendment protects the right to religious liberty. The ACLU of Southern California works to ensure that government does not interfere with people’s exercise of their religion and neither promotes religion over non-religion nor favors particular religious faiths over others.
