SACRAMENTO — Today, Governor Brown delivered his final State of the State Address, highlighting, among many other things, California's productive journey towards sound criminal justice reforms.

In response, Margaret Dooley-Sammuli, Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Director with the American Civil Liberties Union of California, had this to say:

"Over the past few years, California has been a pioneer in enacting smart criminal justice reforms, with Governor Brown at the helm. During this time, Brown has demonstrated a true commitment to addressing inequities, flaws, and waste in California's fraught justice system.

Shifting away from years of draconian and failed tough-on-crime doctrines, Brown has led California in ushering a new era of criminal justice reforms centered on fairness, redemption, rehabilitation and local community solutions. For that, we thank him.

As his tenure as governor begins to come to a close, we look forward to continuing to work with Brown and the Legislature to end this year on a high note and ensure our justice system delivers on its promise of fairness and justice for all."
