OVERVIEW

In collaboration with Cal State LA’s Department of Communication Studies, the ACLU SoCal seeks an intern to work with its Communications & Media Advocacy Department for a part-time, eight to 10-week internship from June to August 2024. 

This internship is open to a student entering their third or fourth year at the Department of Communication Studies at Cal State LA. This internship will be held mostly virtually with occasional site visits and in-person meetings.

Internship Opportunities and Responsibilities

Communications and media advocacy are fundamental to the mission and work of the ACLU SoCal. The Communications & Media Advocacy (CMA) Department is composed of three distinct teams: Media (press and digital), Creative, and Strategic Partnerships.

The selected intern will report directly to a department staffer and will interact directly with communications staff, attorneys, community organizers, partner organizations, and clients. The intern will work on project(s) tailored to their interests and skills as well as the department's priorities, which will be determined in the first week of the internship. The projects may touch upon one or more of the following areas:

  • Editorial and communications strategy
  • Press and media relations
  • Content creation and multimedia
  • Messaging and narrative research 
  • Social media, web, and digital
  • Event planning and partnerships
  • Data analytics and coordination

Internship Learning Outcomes

After completing this internship, the student should be able to:   

  • Apply knowledge of theory and best practices of relational, social, political and intercultural communication  to professional settings.     
  • Demonstrate professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Deliver informative and persuasive multimedia presentations.
  • Write audience and content analysis across media platforms.  

REQUIREMENT(S)

This internship is open to a student entering their third or fourth year at the Department of Communication Studies at Cal State LA. 

The intern will need to enroll in COMM 4180, Internship in Communication Studies during the 2023 Summer Session. Prerequisites for COMM 4180 include COMM 3000, Applied Writing in Communication, and  a theory course (COMM 3100 or 3200), plus a GPA of 2.75 or higher.   

COMPENSATION

The intern may receive a stipend of $3,000.
