Press Release: City of Costa Mesa repeals anti-solicitation ordinance

COSTA MESA—The City of Costa Mesa repealed its unconstitutional anti-solicitation ordinance three years after civil rights organizations sued on behalf of the Asociación de Jornaleros de Costa Mesa, whose members had been restricted from peaceably expressing their need and availability for work in the city’s public areas and Colectivo Tonantzin, an organization dedicated to protecting the interests of immigrant workers and their families in Orange County.

Federal Court Strikes Down City Ordinance Limiting Free Speech

PASADENA — The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a major decision in a case the ACLU of Southern California filed in 2006. It struck down an ordinance in the city of Costa Mesa that limited free speech at its City Council meetings.

Court declines to consider free speech restriction at Board of Supervisors meetings

A federal judge ruled today that a regular speaker at meetings of the Orange County Board of Supervisors cannot challenge a rule restricting critical and derogatory speech by public speakers at open and public board meetings.
