Town Hall on L.A. District Attorney Policies During COVID-19

At a time when Los Angeles County jails and juvenile facilities are potential tinderboxes for the spread of COVID-19, community and advocacy groups are sponsoring a town hall to discuss how the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office has dealt with this critical issue. Several people will speak about conditions inside the facilities where tens of thousands of adults and youths are imprisoned without the space for proper social distancing or hygiene. Other topics include the bail system and medical care for people who are incarcerated.

Incumbent District Attorney Jackie Lacey has declined an invitation to attend. Candidate George Gascón, who is facing Lacey in the November election, has accepted.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 12, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

WHO: Speakers include the president of the Public Defender’s union, the founder of The Bail Project, and representatives of L.A. County’s Department of Health Services. Family members of people who are incarcerated will also speak, as will D.A. candidate Gascón.
