Community Groups Call for More Accountability of Out-of-Control Sheriff's Department
LOS ANGELES — Prior to a court hearing on a lawsuit filed by Los Angeles County against Sheriff Alex Villanueva for reinstating a deputy previously fired for domestic violence, several civil rights and anti-racism organizations will rally outside Superior Court. Speakers will call for more checks and balances over the out-of-control sheriff's department. Not only did Villanueva re-hire Caren Carl Mandoyan — fired in 2016 on reports of attacks and stalking — he also sought to rehire numerous other deputies fired for cause. He has tolerated gangs within his own department and, despite campaign promises, has allowed federal contractors access to immigrants in county jails.
The lawsuit asks the Superior Court to uphold the county's firing of Mandoyan.
