Please attribute the following statement to Belinda Escobosa Helzer, director of the Orange County/Inland Empire offices of the ACLU of Southern California.
“The ACLU of Southern California welcomes the passage of Measures L and M. Both are important ballot plans that will ensure that all voters in Anaheim have a voice at city hall. That hasn't always been the case. But on Tuesday, voters chose to adopt a system that gives all residents a greater say in their neighborhoods and in their local government. We hope that other cities around Orange County take note, and move to adopt modern and equitable election systems that provide greater accountability.”
In 2012, ACLU SoCal sued the City of Anaheim for violating the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA). The case was settled in January 2014.
