Please attribute the following statement to Hector Villagra, executive director of the ACLU SoCal, in regard to the Los Angeles City Council’s vote today to financially support the L.A. Justice Fund to provide legal representation for detained immigrants:

“No one in America should have to face legal trouble as dire and complicated as deportation proceedings without a lawyer. The Los Angeles City Council has done the right thing -- the humane thing -- by today approving $2 million that will go toward the L.A. Justice Fund created to provide attorneys for detained immigrants. It’s especially notable that the city council made its part of the fund widely available to those facing deportation.

“The ACLU of Southern California is proud to be part of the Los Angeles Coalition for Universal Representation that has worked so hard in support of the L.A. Justice Fund.”
