Stop Transfers of Angelenos to Immigration Detention

We are all better off when we are all healthy — especially the most vulnerable among us. Whether it’s people with chronic health conditions or people without shelter, people who are detained or incarcerated, or people providing vital services or those who can’t forgo a paycheck to stay home, we must ensure all of us can access the support and care we need so that we can effectively combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

But despite state and county “safer at home” and social distancing guidelines, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has continued its aggressive and deceptive enforcement operations, undermining the health and safety of Angelenos.

When ICE agents detain our neighbors and loved ones in L.A., they haul them away to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center (Adelanto), where ICE has utterly failed to provide adequate medical care even under “normal” circumstances. Today, Adelanto is a “death trap,” a tinderbox for a COVID-19 outbreak.. As staff and ICE agents go back to their homes each night, a COVID-19 outbreak would affect not just detained individuals but also the broader community.

Yet, in the midst of the raging pandemic, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department has continued to transfer immigrant Angelenos to ICE custody. Last year alone, L.A. County sheriffs turned more than 450 people to ICE.

These are our neighbors — people who would be otherwise released to return home and reunite with their families. Instead, they are now in ICE custody facing life-threatening conditions at Adelanto. Why is our county furthering family separation — not at the border — but right here in L.A.?

Years ago, the City of L.A. took a stand against ICE and stopped transferring Angelenos to ICE custody without a judicial warrant. It’s time L.A. County does the same.

Tell the L.A. County Sheriff and the Board of Supervisors to save lives and immediately stop the transfers of Angelenos into ICE custody.
