The ACLU of Southern California (ACLU SoCal) seeks a bilingual Communications Coordinator to join the organization and support its offices in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Santa Ana, and Bakersfield.

Founded in 1923, ACLU SoCal has been at the forefront of many major efforts to protect civil liberties, civil rights, and equal justice in California. Principled and nonpartisan, ACLU SoCal has offices in Los Angeles, Orange County (Santa Ana), the Inland Empire (San Bernardino), and Kern County (Bakersfield). ACLU SoCal tackles a vast array of issues, including criminal justice, police practices, First Amendment rights, gender equity and reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, immigrants' rights, education equity, and economic justice.


The Communications Coordinator is responsible for effectively providing communications support and administrative assistance to the Communications and Media Advocacy team at the ACLU of Southern California. This position will be the primary point of contact for media requests and will assist as an organizational liaison between communications staff. The position may require a willingness to work beyond a standard 7.5 hour workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events. Work weeks in excess of 40 hours may be required with some frequency. This position is funded for three years, with a possibility for future extension contingent upon additional funding.

The Communications Coordinator is expected to model professional workplace behavior and standards, and clearly and enthusiastically demonstrate guiding principles of integrity, respect, accountability, compassion, and leadership.


Fulltime, Non-Exempt




  • Answer, screen, and/or forward communications received via the media line to the proper recipient(s).
  • Deliver, send, and rush media communiques to reporters via Cision.
  • Coordinate the translation of documents between vendors.
  • Pull and compile reports for data heads on all aspects of communications not limited to press and/or digital media.
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts.
  • Assist with additional copywriting, proofing and other communications items as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Administrative Support

  • Provide communications support by setting up for meetings and handling logistics for catering when necessary.
  • Make travel arrangements for the communications department, arrange meetings, and telephone conference calls.
  • Prepare travel reimbursements and expenses for the department.
  • Coordinate scheduling of all communications calendars including the editorial calendar and individual communications staff calendars.
  • Manage the editorial calendar to ensure deadlines, tasks, and reminders are maintained.
  • Own meeting notetaking to subsequently assign calendar deadlines, tasks, or reminders.
  • Assist with other administrative functions in the communications department.



  • Minimum of 1-3 years' experience in a relevant communications or marketing position.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Creative problem-solver with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond to communication needs.
  • Passionate about civil liberties and civil rights. A professional approach and a commitment to a workplace that values and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.


  • An understanding of or experience within the non-profit sector.
  • Experience with managing calendars, scheduling, and, utilizing Microsoft Outlook.
  • Experience working with project management systems such as AirTable or Trello.
  • Experience with media distribution programs such as Cision and Meltwater.
  • Fluent in Spanish with the ability to speak and write clearly and effectively.​
